The Ross Family Farm, in Washington County Pennsylvania raises “Heritage Breed” animals in an effort to preserve these threatened and endangered species as part of the “Shave ‘em to Save ‘em” Livestock Conservancy initiative. By committing to farming these less commercial breeds, they are helping to keep tradition alive as well as bringing rare wool breeds to artists in our communities. They also happen to be great friends of Queen City Yarn!
The skein we have selected for this month’s club is a worsted weight Corriedale yarn that came from a sheep named Heather.
I decided to name this color way, Calluna in honor of the sheep it came from as Calluna is the scientific name for the Heather plant found along the English and Scottish moors. Corriedale Sheep are bred for both wool and meat, and originated in New Zealand. The Corriedale breed made its way into the US in 1914 and continues to provide a nice thick fleece that usually produces a hard wearing 25-30 micron wool.
The colors may vary from monitor to monitor and we try our best to accurately represent and describe the yarn, Pictures are as accurate as they can be, if you have questions regarding colors, please message us before purchasing.
Our dye technique means each skein will be unique. Your skein might vary slightly from what is pictured.
